The short version

  • Central Moscow is the densest cluster of bank FX desks in the country. On a small slice of the central administrative district — Tverskaya, Tverskoy Boulevard, Nikolskaya Street, Kuznetsky Most, Old Arbat, and Novy Arbat — you'll find dozens of branches of major banks with FX desks and extended opening hours.
  • The widget below shows Moscow banks with USD/EUR/CNY rates and branch addresses. Almost all of them have a presence in the centre.
  • Rates at two banks 200 metres apart can differ. That's normal: central Moscow banks don't "coordinate" — each one sets its own price.
  • Central Moscow makes sense for medium and large amounts, where the rate difference is worth chasing. For small exchanges (under 100 USD), the closest bank on your route beats the "best" rate across town.
  • In the evenings and on weekends, FX desks in the centre often stay open longer than those in residential districts — a handy zone for an "after-work" exchange.

Below is the detailed breakdown: which streets and districts in central Moscow are most convenient for currency exchange, what to know about opening hours, and how to build a "compare, choose, exchange" route that takes about an hour.

Why central Moscow is the country's most "bank-heavy" zone

Independent currency exchange offices no longer exist in Moscow or anywhere else in Russia — cash currency exchange goes through banks and licensed credit institutions. So the geography of FX desks lines up with the geography of bank branches. Central Moscow is historically where flagship offices cluster: Tverskaya, Kuznetsky Most, and Nikolskaya Street host the head offices or premium branches of most of the country's major banks.

The practical effect: on a single street between two adjacent metro stations there can be 8–12 banks with an FX desk. The choice is wider than anywhere else. The downside: in summer and on weekends, foot traffic is heavy and parking is expensive, so the metro is the easiest way in.

Compare rates right now

The widget below lists Moscow banks with current USD/EUR/CNY rates, branch addresses, and update times. Most of the top branches for any direction are in central Moscow.

When you scan the list, pay attention to the district. If three or four leaders on the currency you need are clustered within one metro station in the centre, that's the ideal scenario for an in-person comparison trip.

The main FX-desk zones in central Moscow

Tverskaya and Tverskoy Boulevard. The city's main street. From Manezhnaya Square to Triumfalnaya Square you'll find dozens of branches of major banks in premium formats. Many stay open until 9:00–10:00 PM, and some open on Sundays. This is the best stretch if you want to compare rates in person: between Okhotny Ryad and Mayakovskaya metro stations you can walk past 5–6 banks in 15 minutes. There are also small private-banking units around Tverskaya that work with wealthier clients — they may offer a custom rate on amounts from 3,000 USD/EUR.

Nikolskaya Street, Kuznetsky Most, Lubyanka. The historical heart of financial Moscow. This is where several systemically important banks keep their head offices, with wide FX desks and solid cash reserves in foreign currency. It's worth the trip for a large amount — especially if your usual branch in a residential district has turned you away with a "no banknotes" answer.

Kitay-gorod, Maroseyka, Pokrovka. The area east of the Kremlin. There are fewer flagship branches here, but plenty of mid-sized offices, and a convenient walking route from Kitay-gorod metro to Kurskaya via Maroseyka and Pokrovka. If you need a stop along the way, this is a fine option.

Old Arbat and Novy Arbat. The concentration of banks on Novy Arbat (from Arbatskaya Gate to the Garden Ring) is one of the highest in Moscow. Many branches keep long hours, and some have 24-hour ATM lobbies and self-service zones (though not the FX desks themselves). This is a convenient zone for residents of the western and north-western parts of the city.

Moscow-City (the business district). Technically this isn't "the centre" in the historical sense, but bank density is very high. The towers host premium branches of most major banks with extended hours (some until 10:00–11:00 PM). Handy if you work in Moscow-City.

What matters most about exchanging in the centre

Rates differ between banks, and that's easy to verify in person. On Tverskaya you can walk past three or four branches in 10 minutes and compare rate boards physically. That's a real-world play if your amount is large enough that 30–50 kopecks per unit of currency is worth the effort.

Premium branches offer a custom rate above a certain amount. If you have 3,000 USD/EUR or more, walk into a premium office and ask for the manager. For an amount that size you'll be quoted a rate better than what's on the board. That's standard practice — not "connections" or "insider treatment."

Large banknotes circulate more easily. In the centre — especially in flagship offices — cash reserves are bigger, so 500 € notes or older series of US dollars stand a slightly better chance here than in a residential branch. But it's still worth a phone call.

Parking. In central Moscow it's paid and tight. If you're going with a large amount, take the metro — it's faster and safer.

Security. A large cash amount in central Moscow attracts attention. Walk calmly from the bank to the metro or to your car, don't count money on the street, and don't pull out a stack of rubles at an ATM under the camera. Obvious in theory, but easy to forget in the moment.

Step-by-step plan for exchanging in the centre

  1. Open the rates widget. Pick the 3–4 banks with the best rate for your direction.
  2. See where their central branches are. Most are on Tverskaya, Kuznetsky Most, Nikolskaya Street, or Novy Arbat.
  3. Build a route. If 3–4 banks are in the same zone, that's ideal for an in-person comparison. If they're scattered, pick one you'll definitely visit plus one backup.
  4. Call the first bank on the list. Confirm cash currency is in stock, ask about the rate, and check whether you need an ID.
  5. For a large amount (3,000 USD/EUR or more), ask about a premium branch. You may be directed to an office with a dedicated manager and a custom rate.
  6. Bring your passport. When it's legally required.
  7. At the desk, check the rate one more time. Sometimes the online rate on the website doesn't match the in-branch board — the transaction goes by the board.
  8. Count the money before you walk away from the desk.

Tverskaya is the main street for in-person comparison. Between Manezhnaya Square and Triumfalnaya Square there are 5–6 banks with FX desks within walking distance. Alternatives: Nikolskaya Street / Kuznetsky Most and Novy Arbat.

Is it worth a trip to central Moscow for a better rate when exchanging 100 USD?

Probably not: on 100 USD, the difference works out to 30–100 rubles. That's less than a single round-trip metro ride. Exchange at the closest bank on your route.

Can you exchange currency in central Moscow on weekends?

Yes — some branches open on Saturdays and a smaller share on Sundays. Check the widget for the specific bank. More on this in weekend currency exchange in Moscow.
